A New York-based consumer health company has recently started selling the prescription drugs it sells as a natural alternative to the little blue pill.
“In a world where we’re constantly talking to people about the little blue pill, we want to get people to be aware of it,” said Jeff Kindler, an associate professor at New York University’s School of Public Health.
In 2010, a group of people, including more than a dozen doctors and pharmacists, called for a new drug to treat low blood pressure, or hypertension, in people who don’t have a heart problem. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, tested the drug’s effectiveness and safety, and found it was effective at treating hypertension.
It was also linked to a lower risk of developing bladder cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, and increased risk of Alzheimer’s in people who don’t have a certain type of heart disease, Kindler said.
Doctors and pharmacists also were concerned about the drug’s potential to cause a heart attack, he added. People who take it can develop heart problems in the first place, he said, and people who don’t want to take it should stop taking it.
“Our data shows that it’s important to take it at the right dosage,” Kindler said.
Some of the people who took the drug were more likely to develop heart problems, the study authors said. The study, for instance, found that people who took the drug had a higher risk of dying from heart disease.
It’s not clear why the study was conducted, but Kindler said the results may not apply to everyone. “People who took the study had a higher risk of heart disease than those who didn’t take it,” he said.
The research also has implications for health care reform. Health care reform requires that drug companies follow a “fairly reliable” safety and efficacy test to make sure the drug works. That testing was done by the FDA, which approved the drug for the treatment of high blood pressure and angina in 1998.
Health care reform also is a problem for generic drugs, Kindler said. “We don’t have the data that shows generic drugs work,” he said.
Still, health care reform will probably be a priority for New York-based Kindler, the study authors said.
The New York-based company is among those who have expressed interest in using it as an alternative to the little blue pill, Kindler said, “but it is not yet the same as Viagra.”
The FDA does not approve the use of drugs like Viagra for the treatment of heart disease, according to a press release from the company.
But it’s clear that the drug has a higher potential for abuse. The drug was first approved for a treatment of erectile dysfunction in 1998, when it was sold under the brand name Lyrica. It was first approved for benign prostatic hyperplasia in 2003, and is now available for a range of other conditions, including pulmonary arterial hypertension, pulmonary arterial hypertension and high blood pressure.
That research found that the drug was a potential first-line treatment for patients with cardiovascular disease.
The drug also was approved by the FDA in 2004 to treat erectile dysfunction in men over the age of 40, a condition called pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The FDA has not approved Viagra to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, and it is not known why Viagra would be prescribed in this way, Kindler said.
Still, Viagra may have the same side effects as Viagra, he added. The drug has fewer side effects in patients who already have heart disease, but it may not have the same safety profile as Viagra, he said.
